Village Wells

Digging a well is not only an investment in good health and sanitation, it's an example of economic improvement at the community level.

Potable water is a critical issue for many villages. As sources of water shift, dry up or become contaminated, most villages in Liberia lack the funds to dig new wells. Villagers must travel further and further to find access to clean drinking water, and without transportation this difficult task often falls on women and children. As a result, children are unable to attend school or women are prevented from finding additional work outside of the home.

Project manager Mathew Dennis and co-project manager Helvin "Moses" Binda have overseen the digging of two wells in villages near Monrovia. Each well cost roughly $2,000 to build thanks to costs associated with permits, supplies, logistics, labor and transportation. The site pictured is located in the Soul Clinic community. Soul Clinic is found
within the area known as Paynesville, near Monrovia.

Dennis and Binda have identified two additional locations that would be ideal for wells, but of course funding is needed to get these wells dug.
