Women’s Cottage Industry: Afghanistan

Elevating The Status of Women in Afghanistan

Obedah, from Kak Ear Tak Jar, manages the craftswomen in her village. 2005 PROJECT MISSION
Solace is committed to sustainable economic empowerment for women, both as a way to improve the status of women, and to stabilize local economies and regional politics.

PROJECT HISTORY
Solace International began a series of Women's Cottage Industry (WCI) projects in the spring of 2004. To promote grassroots awareness of the project and generate revenue, Solace began by selling handcrafted goods at a variety of venues across the U.S. Grassroots interest in this program led to an online partnership between the craftswomen and the e-commerce website Overstock.com, which has a nonprofit offshoot called Worldstock.com.

The fair wage paid to these women for their high-quality textiles elevates their status in their communities and families. Currently over 180 Afghan women derive additional income from crafts made for Worldstock.com.
