Where We Work
Nearly half a million people live in Jawzjan province. . Its main capitol, Sheberghan, a two-hour trek by car from Mazzari-Sharif, sits along one of the few well-maintained highways. The city is home to over 250,000, with a mix of Uzbek, Tajiks, Pushtun, Arabs, and tribal nomads. Sheberghan is the center of a region ruled by the former Northern Alliance commander, General Dostum, whose flamboyant campaigning during his bid for the Presidency in 2004 gained him international attention.

Dostum was well known to Pakistani and American intelligence for his aggressive attacks against the Russian Army and,for the most part, against the Taliban.

The province is rich in agriculture and natural gas reserves, though the main economy revolves around the ever-present poppy. Past conflicts with warlords in neighboring Balk have quieted recently. Dostum has proven to be a progressive, if ruthless, leader. The influences of neighboring countries Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and nearby Turkmenistan have allowed a mix of culture and peoples.
