Solace has grown
one project proposal, one news article, and one donation at a time. It has succeeded because of people committed to the needs of communities in developing countries.

Nathaniel Strand York Nathaniel Strand York, Executive Director

In 1995, during the height of the Bosnia war, Nathaniel York worked as project coordinator for the humanitarian aid project “Ship to Bosnia.” He was responsible for the transport of 110 containers of food, clothing, medicine, and emergency equipment to people living in 18 war-ravaged Bosnian cities. In 1995-1996, Nathaniel lived and worked in Croatia and Bosnia, and in 1997 he returned to the United States and made his home in Alaska. But he didn’t stay put for long …

Nathaniel founded the Afghanistan Girls School Project in 2002 after returning from work with aid organizations in Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. Moved by requests from Afghan teachers and students, Nathaniel began fundraising and also overseeing the construction of schools in rural villages in Northern Afghanistan. In between traveling back and forth between Afghanistan and Alaska, Nathaniel earned a BA in Liberal Studies from Alaska Pacific University in 2002.
